ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Saturday, December 16, 2017 – Argentinian two-time Major Champion, Angela Cabrera, and son Angel Cabrera Jr. fired a sensational bogey-free first round 59 (-13) to lead the 2017 PNC Father/Son Challenge at the halfway stage.
Playing in their first PNC Father/Son Challenge, Team Cabrera birdied the first hole before adding further gains on Nos. 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 to turn at 6-under-par before coming back in 29, including three closing birdies to break the magic 60 mark.
Eighteen-time Major winner, former Father/Son champion and the most decorated player in the all-star 2017 PNC Father/Son Challenge field, Jack Nicklaus, is set to make his 16th appearance in the tournament and his first with 15-year-old Grandson, Gary “GT” Nicklaus.
At the age of 77, The Golden Bear joins Arnold Palmer as the only competitor to play alongside a grandson having usually played alongside his sons, Jack and Gary, on alternating years.

Yes, we have been practicing and have also played a few rounds in a scramble to prepare for the tournament format.

This will be my first time playing the PNC Father/Son Challenge so it’s interesting to see what it’ll be like. I’ve been asking a couple of the other guys who’ve played before about what it’s like but either way, I’m really looking forward to playing with my son. My son isn’t a big golfer at this moment
1997 Open Champion Justin Leonard makes his PNC Father/Son Challenge debut in 2017 as the first competitor to play alongside his father. Leonard, who was part of the NBC/Golf Channel broadcast team at last year’s event, will tee it up alongside his father, Larry.

Twenty of the game’s greats will tee it up alongside sons, grandsons – and, in one case, a father – when the tournament returns to The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, Grande Lakes, Dec 14-17. David Duval and stepson Nick Karavites shot 10-under-par 62 on Sunday to win the 2016 PNC Father/Son Challenge with a 123 (-21) total.
The duo defeated 2013 PNC champions Stewart and Connor Cink, newcomers Retief and Leo Goosen, and Fred and Taylor Funk by one shot to earn the $200,000 first-place check.
Duval, who won the 2001 Open Championship, will now add another piece of golf history to his trophy cabinet. The PNC Father/Son Championship winners receive the Willie Park belts, named for the first father and son duo to win the Open Championship, Willie Park Sr. and Jr.

The 47-year-old South African will take on the role of swing coach, mental coach and, most importantly, dad, when the duo tee it up at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, Dec. 8-11. As an eighth-grader, Leo plays on the varsity golf team at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. He also competes on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour and U.S. Kids Golf Tour.
An official PGA TOUR Champions Challenge event, the PNC Father/Son Challenge will underscore its commitment to supporting families and the military by hosting a special K9s For Warriors presentation. That’s where Blessings in a Backpack comes in. The non-profit organization provides food-filled backpacks to school children ages K-5 each Friday to take home over the weekend. Thanks to PNC, during the Father/Son Challenge tournament week, volunteers get together to stuff backpacks, which are then delivered to the Callahan Center.
