The teams of Curtis / Thomas Strange and Bernhard / Jason Langer are tied for the lead at 62 (-10).
First-round leaders/co-leaders have gone on to win this tournament 12 times over the previous 16 events. The biggest come-from-behind victory came in 2001 when Raymond/Robert Floyd trailed by four strokes after Day 1 and posted a 61 on Sunday to edge Hale/Steve Irwin by a stroke.
Curtis Strange and his son Tom shot their best first-round score since 2007 and hold a share of the opening-day lead for the first time in their sixth appearance in this event together. The duo’s best overall effort in the PNC Father/Son Challenge is T3 in 2004.
This year marks the first time Bernhard Langer has played with his youngest son, Jason, in the event. The 14-year-old Langer was a late replacement in the event for daughter Christina who had to withdraw with a back injury. Langer won the PNC Father/Son Challenge with oldest son Stefan in 2005-06.
Raymond Floyd, Larry Nelson, Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino all made their 17th appearances in the PNC Father/Son Challenge today, the only four players to have been in every event.
Defending champions Stewart and Connor Cink posted 6-under 30 on the back nine, the best 9-hole score in Round 1, and are T3 after Saturday play. They are attempting to become the first repeat winner of this event since Larry Nelson won with each of his two sons in 2007-08. Before that, Bernhard Langer won back-to-back events with son Stefan in 2005-06. Raymond Floyd won in consecutive years with Robert Floyd in 2000-01 and also with Raymond Floyd, Jr. three straight times from 1995-97.
