When Dads and Sons Play the “Fifth Major”

Besides golf, Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love III and their PGA colleagues have another important, and rewarding, role – being a dad.

For these professionals, each stroke on the course counts. When it comes to family, the moments on and off the golf course are what matter most. The PNC Father/Son Challenge allows these fathers to celebrate long-time relationships and family as they spend time with their children to compete against other golf legends.

The 2016 tournament will be held at Orlando’s Ritz-Carlton Golf Club on Dec. 8-11. The following are reflections from the legends about the tournament and the lasting memories:

Hale Irwin
2003 Tournament Champion

“It’s really an extended family, you see the other sons, you see the daughters and we’ve all known each other for so many years and it’s just so much fun to see them. But to play with your own child is something special.”

Larry Nelson
3-time Tournament Champion: 2008, 2007, 2004

“It’s kind of the number one tournament on our list. Very seldom do you have the opportunity to spend a couple of days with your sons or daughters in a competition that you’ve been doing for 50 or 60 years. To see their responses, to see how they react under pressure, it’s just a lot of fun for us.”

Jack Nicklaus
1999 Tournament Champion

“People ask me all the time what my dream foursome would be, and I tell them it would have to be a fivesome, so I could get all four of my sons in there. I don’t play much golf any more, but whenever one of the boys wants to play, I will be there. They enjoy playing and because of that, I do, too. It’s a special time each year when we can play a little golf together, but more important, have a lot of fun together.”

Jack Nicklaus II

“What it is really about is simply being out there with Dad—that’s the biggest thing. We’ll have family members and friends watching both of us. We’ll get to spend quality time together, whether it’s on the golf course, or eating dinner together in the evenings, or breakfast in the mornings prior to the rounds.”

Bernhard Langer
Three-time Tournament Champion: 2014, 2006, 2005

The whole tournament is all about family and spending time with your family and the families of other players. For these youngsters it is an amazing few days where they can rub shoulders with some of the legends of the game, deepen some friendships we have and create new memories.”

Davis Love III
2012 Tournament Champion

“Some of us dads jokingly call it the fifth major because we view it as such an honor to play. It’s a great week for the whole family.”

Alastair Johnston
Vice chairman of IMG, co-founder and producer of Father/Son with NBC Sports

“At its core, the PNC Father/Son Challenge is a celebration of the bond between parent and child. The debut of our tournament seal showcases that bond and reminds us how the game of golf can unite our families.”
